What Academic Mode does differently
Three settings separate it from Standard. It does not contract: “it is” stays “it is”, because an essay that suddenly says it's reads as a different document halfway through. Its sentence-splitting threshold is forty-two words rather than thirty-four, so it leaves the long, subordinate-clause-heavy sentences that academic prose legitimately uses and only breaks the ones that have genuinely run away. And it inserts hedging openers rather than informal ones at the second sentence of the passage, which is the register academic writing already uses — a claim that is qualified reads as scholarship, and a claim that is flat reads as a press release.
What it leaves alone, and why that is the hard part
